the question most parents ask when they go to the cupboard to plan a meal is will the kids eat it. and to by quite frank if you ask that to often you find that they often won't. my sons eating habits changed when he went to a daycare that simply didn't give them an option. you eat the cous cous/ meat balls /goulash whatever or you starve. so i started the same program at home and after a couple of teary meals its amazing what your children will eat. now this sytem is not perfect, we still have general decent but i find it much easier to talk them into eating nower days.
recipe cheesey vegetable pave
*preheat oven to 180 c (350f)
ingredients
20gms butter
20gms flour
150ml milk
- make a white sauce with these ingredients (you may post a question if you do not know the method)
2 tblspoons tomato paste
handful chopped basil
-mix this in with the white sauce
1/2 an onion sliced
1 yellow capisicum
100gms field mushrooms sliced
1 clove garlic
- in a large sauce pan saute with a tbl spoon of oil and a tbl spoon of butter all the vegetables above adding them in order of list. cook till quite soft.
200gms large squash peeled and sliced thinly
1 carrot peeled and sliced thinly
- mix these vegetables with the rest of the components and season with salt and pepper,
then pour the contents into a 25cm square deep baking dish with a lid.
place into over and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
cover the top with grated cheddar cheese and bread crumbs (to your liking)
return the dish the over minus the lid and bake till browned on top (10 or so minutes)
serve this on the side of a meat dish or with salad for vegetarian. and the verdict from the kids? 7 out of 10 in other words after initially turning their noses up at it they got used to it and eventually were eating it without too much fuss. and that is a win for dad and his vegetable friends. tune in tommorow as we visit a halal market and do a chicken dish.
