seasonal produce.
Though you can get some of this produce all year round there are many benefits of eating them in season, for a starter they are cheaper and the quality will be more consistent. I have also heard that because in the not to distant past we had to eat seasonally we have systems predisposed to eating in season, so there could well be a health benefit. Pink and yellow grape fruit along with their near cousins Ellendale and honey murcott mandarins will be on the shelves soon and I have already seen great prices for some species of pineapple. Custard apple and cumquats should also be making appearances at the two big supermarkets. While pawpaw and avaocado are in season now. A lot of these I used to eat all the time up north, and to be honest the quality down here is usually a bit dodgy, but if you crave the tropical delights above only eat them when they are in season. Jerusalem artichoke, green and purple asparagus and brussel sprouts all provide opportunity for some fantastic old world cooking (try brussel sprouts poached in stock then fried in butter with lardons of bacon. Yum!) now if you hunt mushrooms you may be able to tell me if you can find morels in Australia all I know is they are in season but if your getting them from France you won’t see much of a discount.
i will be off line for the rest of the week as i am having broad band put in, should be back with some interesting new features as of the 2/9/07
Have a great first month of spring, regards, Dave
