sorry for my absence
June 4th 2007 04:25
Hello to anyone who has been checking this blog. I firstly would like to apologise to the handful of people who have checked in on culinarian in the previous weeks. I can only say that my absence was due to a combination of car disasters and medical problems. So that behind me lets get to subject of the next few entries being that of diet. I will be covering a range of general subject that have become relevant to me in the recent past, these will include my staple bug bear of “ how to get your kids to eat the good stuff”. I will also be discussing realistic dieting, weight loss, weight gain (intentional), combating disease with food. I have been developing some menus around typical home cooking made with particular care to avoid excessive fat and high calorie foods. So with out further ado here we go.
The continuing adventures of Izaac and Ruby in good food land
Since my last entry my little darlings have been treated to a constant and relentless parade of fresh vegies, meat dishes, stir fry’s and home made soups of all types. We have made advances in that our children now know that they wont under any circumstance get an alternative meal if they don’t eat what I cook. They are also eating vegetables that are not always pureed or grated, this opens up the range of dishes you can expect your kids to eat immensely, mine now eat roast lamb with pumpkin, potato, carrot, onion and garlic, another recent success was ratatouille. I must say to all parents out there who are trying to influence their kids eating habits, in my experience it is a lengthy process if you have (like we did) allowed the bad habits such as expecting alternatives, playing with their food, spitting out the “good stuff” or refusing to eat most of the meal. We over came this by furnishing our off spring with to choices eat quietly and with out intentional mess at the table or go to bed to sleep.
After this threat was carried once on our son and a couple of times with our daughter misbehaviour at dinner time reduced dramatically. The other thing that works is dangling the carrot. Now if your child loves carrots then you will never feel guilty about bribing them. This is not usually the case but fear not inducements don’t have to be sugary treats, your kids will get used to being bribed by other things such as fruit , popcorn (Home made), yogurt. Using the promise of a favourite book or video, board game, or an outing are all other bribes I have used in the war on crappy eating habits. The main thing to remember is that if they don’t eat they don’t get so don’t promise stuff that one way or another they will get any way. The third thing is always eat what you expect your kids to be eating. Serving up stirfry and hiding in the kitchen with a burger and chips then your efforts are doomed. If that is you then it would be a good idea to change your eating habits any way. The last and I should say most abundantly productive method is loud sincere parental praise this will be the lynch key in any method you employ and though the others I would suggest are optional this one must be used first and foremost, it has often been said that a hugs will trump money or the bomb so using words like proud and well done will often negate the use of other methods.

I would like to know what you do to counteract a diet of coffee, beer and cigarettes.
